Obituary

Richard Neil Norwood ("Dick" to his wife and friends), 77, passed away on June 23, 2020 at his home in Windermere, Florida, surrounded by his family.

Richard was born and raised in Oxford, North Carolina, to Ballard and Gwendoyln Norwood. In North Carolina he was and still is known as "Neil." Like his father and two brothers, Ballard and Bev, he graduated from Wake Forest University. He then served as an officer in the United States Army. Following his discharge, Richard moved to Pittsburgh to work for a defense contractor (the Westinghouse Plant Apparatus Division, later Bechtel PAD) for over 35 years. In Pittsburgh he met his wife Virginia and raised his family. Following his retirement Richard and Virginia moved to Windermere, where they both worked at Walt Disney World. Richard took pride in being the only part-time employee qualified to work at all the rides in Fantasyland.

Richard's family will remember his devotion, his wit, and his strategy of walking around the restaurant to see "what everyone else is having" before he ordered. He is survived by his older brother Ballard, his wife Virginia, his son Ryan, his daughter Megan Ellis, his daughter-in-law Kris Bergstrom, his son-in-law Kerry Ellis, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request's donations be made to the world central kitchen at: https://donate.wck.org/give/236738/#!/donation/checkout"

One wonderful memory...early 70's ... DIck & GInny rounded up several Westinghouse coworkers and we had a jazzy evening at the old Walt Harper's Attic in Pittsburgh. So many sweet times ... so long ago..but there are no words for the gentle man Dick had been ... and to somehow send warm and prayers to his family... I just glimpsed Megan trying to save her gummy bear vitamin near her 'ahem' ... which was a early memory...ahhh... go gently into the night...

Our deepest sympathy to the family. Dick was a down to earth, fun guy to work with and for at WPAD. He had great perspective and often brightened the day with his humor. We will miss him.

My sympathy to Ginny and all of Dick’s family. I worked with Dick in various capacities for over 35 years. He was a highly intelligent and unique individual. He knew how to get things done and solve problems in an effective and entertaining manner. He will be missed but always remembered.
