Peter Lawrence Alden
Peter Lawrence Alden was born May 17th, 1959 in Boston, Massachusetts, and died peacefully of heart failure in Ocoee, Florida on May 29th, 2016 at the age of 57.
Peter grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia in the West Point Grey neighborhood, and early in his life showed prowess as a runner. By eighth grade, he became provincial champion in the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter distances, and at one time he held 18 provincial records for his age group. His efforts earned him a scholarship to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, giving him opportunities to run in the prestigious Drake Relays.
Following university, Peter began a series of three distinct careers. He worked as a computer programmer for a number of companies in the health care business, as well as for Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. He tired of writing code, however, and in 1994 he bought a farm with his wife Jan Widmeyer Alden. Alden Farms, based in Monroe, Washington, was a family farm that sold organic potatoes. The family was a fixture at several farmer’s markets in Seattle, WA and sold their crop throughout the country. Alongside the farm, Peter and Jan supplemented their income with a self-serve driving range in the field behind their home.
After 16 years on the farm, Peter’s entrepreneurial passion drove the family across the country to Central Florida, becoming the owner of Spin City Cycles, in Apopka, a bicycle sales and repair business. Peter and his wife, Jan, have owned the business for the last 5 years. The business got Peter heavily back into exercise and he was often seen throughout Central Florida, on 30-40 mile sojourns on his Bianchi. It is only fitting that Peter passed away while riding his bike with his wife, doing something that he loved with the woman he loved the most.
Peter had three children; Emily, who lives with her husband in Ohio, and Danielle and Justin who both make their homes in Washington State.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Jan; his three children, Emily (David and son, Henry), Danielle and Justin; his mother Louise Alden (Tom Sandborn), his father Thomas Alden (Marjorie Sinel); his three siblings, Ted (Fiona James and children Callum and Charlotte), Laura (David Anderson and children Moriah and Katrina) and Jamie (Suzanne Jarvie and children Sara, Julius, Avery and Claire).
A celebration of his life will be held in the coming weeks for the cycling community and his friends in Florida. Peter’s memorial service will be held near Seattle in late July giving the opportunity for family and friends to celebrate his life, passion and humor.
